About Us
Ocean Week Campbell River aims to benefit the community by increasing awareness of local marine ecosystems, our close ties to the ocean, and the importance of conservation. The series of community events provide educational resources, empowering informed decisions to be good citizens of the Coast.
Our History
2023 was the re-launch of Ocean Week in Campbell River. A partnership between the Maritime Heritage Centre and Discovery Passage Aquarium, and with assistance from Ocean Networks Canada, the events included sea star surveys, beach clean ups, interpretive reef walks, a concert of sea shanties, sea schools hosted by both organizations, free and reduced admissions, a partnership with Loop Day and participation by CETUS, and a partnership with Suzanne Jolly for a screening of the second season premier of Where the Wind Meets the Tide.
Starting in 2002 Ocean Day has been celebrated in Campbell River. In 2013 the mayor of Campbell River declared June 2-8 as “Ocean Awareness Week”. This coincided with the Opening of Discovery Passage Aquarium - an exciting project that had finally come to fruition. Ocean Days of that time brought hundreds of people to the parking lot at the Maritime Heritage Centre for fun ocean-themed activities, demonstrations and displays. We are thrilled that some of the original team is back, working with some new partners to bring back the large scale community event for Ocean Day.
Ocean Week Canada
Ocean Week Canada is an annual national celebration of ocean events, learning, and engagement held during the week of World Ocean Day (June 8). Events bring together individuals, organizations, communities, government agencies, artists, and more to raise awareness about the importance of connecting to and protecting the ocean. Some of the activities that take place during Ocean Week Canada include beach cleanups, educational workshops, public lectures, film screenings, interactive art exhibits, learn to paddle or surf, and more.
